There are many factors that allow a mare to conceive and carry a foal. If you, as an owner, want to breed your mare, it can be beneficial to have a pre-breeding exam performed. Before spending time and money to get your mare in foal, it’s good to know that your mare appears physiologically capable of getting pregnant as well as maintaining that pregnancy. An evaluation of your mare’s reproductive history will assist the DVM to make decisions about necessary procedures.
The Breeding Soundness Exam may include:
- Physical examination of her general health
- Rectal palpation
- Rectal Ultrasound
- Speculum exam of the mare’s cervix and vagina
Laboratory Tests can include:
- CBC & Blood Chemistry
- Uterine Biopsy/Histopath
- Uterine Culture & Sensitivity
- Uterine Cytology
